Abstract

Muller in 1947 described the "Protein Index", a produc t of a ratio of wave heights in first to second reactions of polarographic protein waves multiplied by a coefficient and its normal value was ranged between 1 and 5, but that of patients with malignant tumor was more than 5. The results of the indep obtained from 149 patients with genito-urinary diseases are as follows, 1. Normal v a lues of protein index were ranged between 2.23 and 4.80 with average 3.15 (Table 1). 2. The i n dexes of the patients were shown in Table 2-12. The average values of the index in each disease were shown in Table 13. 3. The most significant change in protein ind ex was found in patients with malignant tumor, among which 90% showed moderate changes in the index and in 70% the index was more than 3 times normal value. However, less changes in the index were found in patients with sexual glands tumor. 4. Protein index has also markedly changed in renal tuberculosis, bilateral, and recurrent ureterolithiasis. 5. Even if either first or second reaction failed to react due to marasmus in cases of malignant tumor or tuberculosis, protein index changed in proportion to severity of the diseases. 6. Protein index is valid in establishing diagnosis and prognosis of the patients with malignant tumor.
