抄録: 1. This paper deals with clinical statistics on the pati e nts with tumor of the prostate seen at the department of Urology, Hiroshima University Hospital during the period of 1956 to 1960. 2. Incidence—Among 3257 outpatients, there were 230 cases (7.1%) of benign hypertrophy, 19 cases (0.6%) of carcinoma, and one case (0.03%) of sarcoma of the prostate, totally being 250 cases (7.7%). Out of 1999 male patients, they occupied 11.5%, 1.0%, and 0.05% respectively, totally being 12.5%. 3. Age of Patien t s —In benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) 8 7.4% of them aged more than 60, and even 48.2% more than 70. On the other hand, in carcinoma, their age distribution was seen in rather younger groups, being mostly in the seventh and next in the sixth decade. 4. Occupation of the patients had nothing to do with their prostatic condition. M ost of them were farmers or retired people. 5. Most of the patients vi s i ted the hospital within one year since the onset of symptoms. Patients with carcinoma seemed to have visited earlier than those with BPH. This fact suggests a close relationship between carcinoma and its initial symptoms. 6. Their first visit was frequent in Summer and less fre q uent in Winter. 7. The most frequent chief complaint of BPH was dysuria. Frequen c y and burning were next. In carcinoma, hematuria was the most frquent complaint. 8. As to the complications recognized at the ti m e of their first visit to the hospital, cystitis, urolithiasis and/or cardiovascular lesions were noted in 70.5% of them. 9. Residual urine was mostly less than 50cc. No difference was noted b e tween carcinoma and BPH. 10 . Mass palpated by rectal examination was mostly as hen-egg or smaller than it in BPH, whereas carcinoma presented smaller mass than BPH. Tenderness, consistence, and irregular surface were, however, remarkable in carcinoma. 11. Vesical capacity was normal in most cases. Patients with carcinoma showed larger capacity than those with BPH. BPH affected multiple lobes extensively, whereas carcinoma affected single lobe in localized manner. This seems, however, due to the difference of progress of each lesion. 12. Renal function was studied by means of Indigocarmine test, P. S. P., water test, NPN etc. Most of patients showed satisfactory renal function, but impairment was seen in BPH rather than in carcinoma. This is probably due to the difference of progress and size of obstructing mass.
