抄録: An analysis was made on 118 patients with acute and chronic urinary tract infections who were treated with Hippramine, the hippuric acid salt of methenamine (hexamethylenetetramine hippurate). The results were summarized as follows: 1) The overall efficacy of Hippramine by oral administration was 68%. 2) The urinary pH was determined in 17 healthy human subjects while some of then were on Hippramine at daily doses of 4 tablets in 9 persons, 3 tablets in 3 persons and without adiministration in 5 persons. Urinary pH of the subjects given 4 tablets per day showed rather stable maintenance of pH 6.0. 3) Hippramine was effective in 80% of patients with acute simple cystitis and in 100% of chronic simple pyelonephritis. 4) The overall efficacy of Hippramine in 43 cases of simple upper or lower urinary tract infections was 86.96' (32 cases), while in 81 cases of complicated upper and lower urinary tract infections it was 58% (45 cases). 5) The catheterization in the upper and lower urinary tracts was maintained in 26 patients, of whom only 3 (12%) were satisfactorily treated. 6) Serial quantitative bacterial cultures of urine specimens were accomplished in 74 of 118 patients. In 44 patients Staphylococcus infection was found, in 33 E. coli, in 17 Streptococcus, in 9 Klebsiella, in 9 Cloaca, in 7 Pseudomonas and in 6 Proteus. Cloaca and Pseudomonas showed less response to Hippramine treatment. 7) Six different side effects were noted in 6 out of 118 patients treated, but none of them was significant.
