Nonspecific epididymitis is not an uncommon disease, but few reports on it were found in a search of the literature. The present paper reports an investigation that was undertaken to elucidate the mechanism of development of nonspecific epididymitis using an experimental model. Material and methods: Rabbits each weighing about 3 kg were used in the experiment. Following intravenous anesthetization, an incision of about 1 cm was made into the skin in the inguinal region to expose only the ductus deferens, and 0.1 ml of inoculum containing 10[8], 10[6] , 10[5] , 10[4] or 10[3] cells/ml of clinically isolated Ps. aeruginosa A 14, S. marcescens No 2, Pr.mirabilis GN 79 or E. coli C 11 strains was injected into the ductus deferens near the tail of the epididymis in the direction of the testes. At 3 days after inoculation, the animals were sacrificed, and the ductus deferens, epididymis, and testicle were removed for bacteriological and histological studies. Results: All the strains of microorganisms tested caused epididymitis. The affected organs or tissues were examined bacteriologically and histologically: Ps. aeruginosa had caused the severest infection, followed by Pro mirabilis, S. marcescens, and E. coli in decreasing order. E. coli, however, at an inoculum size of 10[8] cells/ml or smaller barely caused infection. The dilated lumens of affected epididymiis were measured by the point counting method. Epididymal dilation was found to correlate closely with the histological findings of epididymal infection. With the progTess of epididymitis, an infectious disease in the testes and diminished spermatogenesis were also noted. Epididymal tissue was examined for causative microorganisms. In the groups exposed to Ps. aeruginosa, Pro mirabilis or S. marcescens which cause severe infection, all sites examined were positive for these strains of organisms, whereas the groups receiving E. coli inocula of 10[4] cells/ml or less were completely negative.en
