Abstract

In order to know if ischemic necrosis of the prostate, semin a l vesicle or vas deferens result from obstructed blood circulation secondary to ligation of the bilateral internal iliac arteries, a histological study was made on the normal and benign prostatic hyperplasia of man and on the normal seminal vesicle and vas deferens of a rabbit before and after the operation. 1. In the normal prostate, seminal vesicle, and vas deferens, no appa r e nt histological difference was demonstrated between before and after the operation. This may be attributed to the supplementary circulation achieved by other arteries than the internal iliac arteries. 2. In the case of prostatic hyperplasia, marked atrophy was noted in the conne c tive tissue though the adenomatous lesion remained little changed. This may be interpreted as that ligation of the internal iliac arteries can cause a substantial diminution of the enlarged prostate and therefore is sufficiently effective, though not a radical cure, from the clinical viewpoint.
