dc.description.abstractFifty-five outpatients suffering from the urinary tract infections were treated by sulfamethoxazole (SMX)-trimethoprim (TMP) combination product in ratio 5: 1. SMX-TMP combination product was administered orally 2 tablets two times daily for 3 days. The results were summarized as follows. 1) The clinical response was excellent in 32 (58.2 %), effective in 17 (30.9 %) of 55 cases of the urinary tract infections. Bacteriological response was excellent in 31 (56.4 %), effective in 19 (34.5 %). 2) The effectiveness rate in acute and chronic cystitis was 90.0 % (in 36 of 40 cases) and 66.7 % (in 2 of 3 cases) respectively. 3) The effectiveness rate in patients with Escherichia coli infection was 93.6 % (in 44 of 47 cases). 4) Side effects were seen in 2 patients (3.8 %) who showed skin reaction and gastrointestinal discomfort. 5) It was evaluated that SMX-TMP combination product is a useful antibacterial agent especially for the acute urinary tract infections.en
