Abstract

This is a statistical report on the recurrence of bladder tumor when surgical procedures other than total cystectomy were performed. It is based on the study of 398 patients who consulted the urological clinics belonging to the Bladder Tumor Study Group in Osaka during the one year from January 1 to December 31 in 1975. 1) Recurrence of bladder tumor was found in 160 of 398 patients (40.2%). 2) The periods of follow-up care after the treatment were divided into six stages: stage I was 0-6 months after operation, stageII was 6 months to 1 year, stageIII was 1-2 years, stageIV was 2-3 years, stageV was 3-4 years, stageVI was over 4 years. The total number of patients with recurrence of tumor in all stages was 247 cases. Therefore, the average recurrence was 1.5 times per patient. The following is the result of these 247 cases. 3) The recurrence of tumor was found most frequently within one year after treatment, about one-third of all patients. The recurrence rate of each one year period from the second year to fourth year after treatment was about 25%, and it was 28.6% after fifth year. The recurrence of tumor was more frequently found in multiple type than in single tumor. 4) The relationship between the recurrence of tumor and the method of surgery: The recurrence of tumor is most frequently found in electrocoagulation, but no significant difference was found among partial cystectomy, simple resection of tumor and transurethral resection. 5) This study shows a tendency that the combination of chemotherapy with other treatments, principally surgical, is useful in preventing the recurrence of tumors, although there is no statistic significance.
