Abstract: An experimental study was carried out on 99mTc-DMSA uptake and intrarenal localization using Wistar rats. Total renal uptake was 50.27% 2 hours after injection of DMSA. The uptake per one gram kidney weight was 23.89% in average on both kidneys. If the uptake of one kidney is called 100%, the renal cortical uptake was 95.72%, whereas the renal medullary uptake was 4.27%. Macroautoradiography showed that most of DMSA is localized in the renal cortex. The renal cortex was separated into the glomerulus and the tubulo-interstitial tissue by Spiro's method. The glomerular uptake was 3.6% and the tubulo-interstitial uptake was 96.4%. Thus, DMSA uptake of the kidneys measured outside of the body reflects the actual renal uptake of this substance. It was again confirmed that DMSA accumulates to the renal cortex and presents renal cortical function well. Our renal uptake formula of DMSA was proved to be correct both in the experimental and clinical studies. It would be useful for the clinical kidney function studies.
