Six patients with terminal bladder carcinoma were treated with subselective intraarterial infusion of adriamycin. These patients consisted of 4 recurrent cases after previous operation and 2 inoperable cases. Various pain such as ischias, perineal or anal pain was clinically relieved in 3 of 4 cases, and these patients could be passed without analgesic agents. Swelling of the lower extremity also decreased in 3 of 4 cases, and difficulties in walking gradually disappeared in 2 cases. Tumour size was partially reduced when judged by cystoscopy or cystography in 2 cases, but the other 4 cases had no response by rectal examination. Hematological and immunological suppression were not observed except in one case, in which adriamycin was infused daily for the first three days. As side effects, alopecia occurred in 5 cases, gastrointestinal disturbance in 3, stomatitis in 2, and cardiac dysfunction in 1. Therefore, serious toxicity was not clinically experienced. Thus, this subselective intraarterial infusion of adriamycin was considered to be a useful method as conservative treatment for terminal bladder carcinoma without any risk, but seemed to be effective only slightly to the tumor itself.en
