抄録: Infrared spectroscopic analysis of 400 urinary stones obtained at Kanazawa Medical University revealed that 311 stones (77.8%) contained calcium oxalate. Urinary oxalic acid is very important because it is a commonest constituent of urolithiasis. Modified Hodgkinson and Williams' method was presented. Mean values of coefficient of variation was 2.3% in 25 standard solutions and 3.8% in 20 urine samples. The recovery of oxalic acid was 89.7±7.2 (S.D.) %. Effect of various compounds on determining oxalic acid was minimum. The mean value of urinary oxalic acid in 50 calcium oxalate stone formers was higher (35.8±21.1 mg/day) than that of non stone formers (27.2±14.3 mg/day) (p<0.05). Yachiku's method was also estimated. The recovery was 89.2%. The method was relatively simple and less time-consuming than Hodgkinson and •Williams' method, though its CV was too large. The correlation coefficient of the value measured by these two methods was 0.614, which showed linear relationship. Modified Hodgkinson and Williams' method can be utilized for determining the urinary oxalic acid for 14 duplicate samples per day.
