Non-specific cellular immunity is depressed in patients with urinary bladder carcinoma. Various immunotherapies have not been very effective against carcinoma even when tumor antigenicity is demonstrated. Therefore there might be some factors suppressing the immune reaction between the tumor and the resistance of the host. Two factors, cellular and humoral, have been suggested to inhibit the immune response of tumor-bearing patients. We studied the lymphocyte subset (IgG-Fc receptor-positive T lymphocyte, Tγcell) of 45 patients with urinary bladder carcinoma and 12 age-matched control subjects to examine the cellular factors. This subset was identified by means of double rosette formation with sheep erythrocytes and Sc-γ particles. There was a tendency of increase in percentage of T r cells in the patients with a higher grade and stage of tumor. After removal of the tumor, the percentage of Tγcells was significantly decreased in the higher grade and stage groups, but it was unchanged in lower grade and stage groups. Immunotherapy with NK-421 or OK-432 also reduced the T-cell population to normal. However, whether this lymphocyte functioned as a helper Tγcell or suppressor T cell is not clear.en
