To evaluate its clinical effects and safety in conformity with the estimations of efficacy of antimicrobial agents standardized by the UTI committee, FOM-Na was administered intravenously to 19 patients with complicated urinary tract infections. The following results were obtained: Overall clinical efficacy was excellent in 3 patients, moderate in 5 patients and poor in 11 patients. The effectiveness rate was 42.1 %. Overall clinical efficacy as classified by type of infection was 50% in 10 patients with a single infection, and 33.3 % in 9 patients with more than one infection. Bacteriological studies showed that 21 of the 31 strains isolated from the urine of the 19 patients, were completely eradicated, the bacteriological response being 66.7%. The following side effects were detected in both blood chemistry checks and clinical symptoms. Peripheral blood examinations showed a slight decrease in RBC, Ht and Hb levels in 1 patient. Liver function tests showed a slight elevation of GOT and GPT levels in 5 patients. Kidney function tests revealed a slight elevation of BUN in 1 patient and slight elevation of BUN and creatinine in 1 patient. A rise in No. and depletion of K was noted in one patient's serum electrolyte. In 1 patient, administration of FOM-Na was discontinued after the first dose because eruptions developed on his whole body. Three patients developed nausea, but no treatment was necessary.en
