The present article forms a supplement to his article "On the cities in the Western Han Period" which appeared in Toho-gaku, vol. II. In the Western Han period Ch'ang-an was the centre of "fashion" or "vogue" in urban life, and it was, moreover, the model town at that time. Studies of this city seems, therefore, to throw light upon urban life in general under the Western Han dynasty. Fortunately, a considerable amount of material is available for such studies, and in the present article are made use of Shih-chi, Han-shu, and fragments of some lost texts of the Han dynasty found in various cyclopaedias of later ages. Ch'ang-an which prospered during the Western Han period showed a sudden decay with the advent of the Eastern Han dynasty. As Pan-ku said, Ch'ang-an represented in fact the Western Han dynasty itself not only in its military aspect but in its industrial feature.en
