Abstract

The li was not the spontaneous community, though it has been sometimes so suggested, but it was the unit which made possible the people registration, while the t'ing was the unit of the land registration. The hsiang consisted of a series of t'ings, while the hsiang was divided into lis administratively. The hsiang was thus the unit of the local administration which was responsible for the enforcement of rent and poll-tax.
