dc.description.abstract | Wu-ti (武帝) of Han dynasty intended to quarter the armies along the trade road which ran through the areas of the Hsiung-nu (匈奴). But the recruitment of the army in the far-off countries was so difficult that the settlement of the soldiers on the soil was deliberately made by the order from the East. This is the t'un-t'ien, which originated far back into the Chou (周) era. But the success of the quartersystem of the Han era was rendered by the ample labour force of the army. Especially in the district of Chu-yen (居延), the tai-t'ien method was introduced, which Chao-kuo (趙過) urgently proposed. The tai-t'ien method is characterized by the great land-ownership which utilized the oxen-driven plough-teams. | en |
