黄巢の亂 (特集 唐代史の諸問題)

Abstract

We find various revolts in the latter part of the 9th century, resulting from the desperate conditions of the populace under the rule of T'ang (唐). Some of these are the revolt of Ch'iu Fu (裘甫) (859-860 A.D.) and that of P'ang Hsun (龐勛) (874-884), but the final and biggest was that of Huang Ch'ao(黃巢), which lasted from 874 to 884. Huang Ch'ao recruited his supporters from various social strata, including peasants, bandits, soldiers and even intellectuals. He was clever enough to screen those who were suspected of their loyalty, and survived struggle for a period of ten years during which time he drove out the T'ang emperor, occupied the capital, and established his own rule. His success was due to the fact that he took advantage of dissatisfaction and resistance of the oppressed people, but eventually misrule after the occupation of the capital led to his downfall. Though the revolt itself did not lead to the collapse of the T'ang dynasty, it was one of its main causes.
