<実践報告>日本人学生と外国人留学生の共学による実績と課題点の考察 --京都大学国際教育プログラムにおける英語による日本古典文学の教育を通して--

Abstract

本稿は、日本人学生と外国人学生による共学を取り巻く種々の問題に着目し考察するものである。多国籍の学生間における学術交流を刺激し育成するために、日本の複数の大学においてこうした共学を軸にした授業が展開されている。これらの授業の教授言語は日本語または英語であることが多い。筆者は2006年より「京都大学国際教育プログラム」の一環として、日本の古典を取り上げた講義を提供してきた。交換留学生と本学正規生に同時開講されているもので、講義は英語で行われている。多国籍で、またその大半が非英語母語話者であるこれらの学生に対し、言語的にも文化的にも日本特有の産物である古典を教授する際には、さまざまな課題が表面化する。本稿を通して、外国人学生、日本人学生、各々の共学の環境に置かれた場合の強弱を明らかにし、さらに、反対にこれらの強弱を生かすという教授方法を取り入れた新しい授業形態の可能性について検討してみたいと思う。

This paper addresses a number of the issues surrounding collaborative learning among Japanese and international students. Courses designed to stimulate and foster intellectual exchange among students of different nationalities and cultural backgrounds are offered at a number of Japanese universities in a variety of disciplines. The language of instruction is usually either Japanese or English. The author has been teaching an introductory course in classical Japanese literature since 2006 through the Kyoto University International Education Program. The course is taught in English and is offered concurrently to international exchange students and Japanese undergraduate students. In this paper the author examines some of the unique challenges that arise from teaching material that is inherently Japanese – from both a linguistic and cultural perspective – simultaneously to Japanese and international students, the majority of whom are nonnative speakers of English. The author also discusses the possibility of offering a similar course as a small group seminar, which would allow the incorporation of new teaching methods that actually utilize students' strengths and weaknesses to their advantage in the collaborative learning environment.
