ダライ・ラマ14世における祈りとモダニティ

Abstract

本稿は、ダライ・ラマ14 世が公の場で多くの人々に語りかける祈りの分析を通して、彼の宗教観を明らかにすることを目的としている。彼によると宗教は人間にとって必ずしも必要なものではない。不可欠なのは、むしろ、他者の役に立とうとする心の質である。その上で、宗教の役割はそのような心の質を育むことにある。われわれは、緊密な相互依存関係によって成り立っているモダニティを生きている。そうであるからこそ、他者の幸福に対して積極的に関心を抱き、責任感を持たねばならない。それはもはや宗教の問題ではなく、われわれの生き残りをかけた現実問題である。このような観点に立つ彼の祈りは「宗教の心であり、中心点」をなすものではなく、「人間の心であり、中心点」をなすものである。そして、この転回をもたらしたものは、モダニティの現実であった。

The purpose of this paper is to bring out the view of the 14th Dalai Lama on religion. This topic is considered through the analysis of his prayers. We are not concerned with his Buddhist ritual prayers, but the prayers that he stated publicly. According to the Dalai Lama, it is not necessary for everyone to be a religious believer. But, spirituality is essential. We need spirituality concerned with some qualities of human spirit such as love, compassion, a sense of responsibility and so on. It is what brings happiness to both self and others. The role of religion is to develop such spirituality. We live in modernity, the world that is ecoming smaller and increasingly interdependent. Therefore, we should have concern and a sense of responsibility for happiness of others. This is not a question of re ligion, but rather a question of our own survival. Standing this ground, the prayers of the Dalai Lama are not the heart and the central point of “religion”, but “humanity”. What brings this turn is the reality in modernity.
