博物館における表象行為と社会的差別 : 差異の表象をめぐって

Abstract

本稿は，社会的差別というテーマを博物館が展示する際に生起する表象をめぐる課題について考察する。博物館論を念頭に置きつつ，人権問題を扱う地域博物館の学芸員としてわたくしが経験したことにそくして考えてみたい。本稿では，差異の表象に関する諸問題を中心に検討する。従来の研究では，そのような問題は主にテクスト分析を通してなされてきたが，学芸員自身の日常的な営為については，十分に探求の眼差しが向けられてきたとは言い難い。しかし，博物館展示のもつ広い社会的影響力を考慮すると，社会的差別のような抽象的なテーマに取り組む学芸員の日常的な営為を取り上げることに意義が見出せる。わたくしの場合は，近代日本社会において「部落民」として差別を受けてきた人びとをめぐる展示を通して，いわゆるタブーに挑戦したのであるが，そこから博物館と学芸員にとっての新たな役割と任務が明らかになった。それは，博物館展示においては観覧者(来館者)と常に情報交換と意思疎通や交渉をすること，当事者，研究者，教育関係者，観覧者(来館者)と協同すること，そして差別被差別の二項対立概念を超えること，さらに「当事者」という概念を問うことである。博物館展示が，社会的差別に対抗する思考を発展させる契機をつくりだすのに有効であるとするならば，博物館と学芸員は展示主体として自己の立場と立ち位置を表明すべきである。「中立性」や「客観性」を追求しようとすると，むしろ被差別当事者(あるいは集団)に対する誤解を再生産させかねないからである。ゆえに，博物館展示では歴史的資料を元の文脈から切断して現代の文脈に置換する際，それについて固有の位置づけや解釈を示すことが必要とされるのである。そのことは，私たちが博物館展示に対して，より再帰的な方法と実践をひらくことを可能にするだろう。

This paper aims to examine the ways in which representation matters at museum exhibitions taking up the theme of social discrimination. Informed by developments in museum studies, it offers my reflections on my experience as a curator of a local museum, which focused on human rights exhibits. The central aim of this paper is to discuss issues concerning the representation of difference. Such issues have thus far been explored mainly through text. Yet considering its wider social influence, it is worth exploring daily practice of curators who tackle such an abstractive theme as social discrimination. Through reflections on my experience with a taboo challenging exhibition on the historically persecuted burakumin in early modern Japan，this paper identifies new roles and missions for curators and museums. These include: communicating with viewers through museum exhibitions，collaborating and negotiating with the ‘insiders', scholars, educators and visitors, going beyond the dichotomy between discriminator and discriminated, and questioning the notion of the ‘insider'. If museum exhibitions are to work against discriminatory ideology, curators and museums must reveal their positions and positionality. Pursuing neutrality and objectivity is rather likely to result in the perpetuation of misunderstandings and prejudice against minority groups in the present day. It is thus necessary to show one's own interpretation of historical objects when replacing them in the current context. It will enable us to develop a more reflective approach and practice with regard to museum exhibits.
