抄録: | In the middle of the Wanli era of Ming (from the end of the 16th century to the beginning of the 17th) there arose a series of mass movements in the area along Lake T'ai-hu, protesting against the rule of the gentry and the bureaucracy. In the writings of those officials and landlords who were involved in the event we find materials which throw a Iight on the power structure based on landownership. The author takes up one of these movements, which took place at Nanhsun-chen (南潯鎮), Wu-ch'eng-hsien (烏程縣), Hu-chou-fu (湖州府), involving a powerful clan Tung (董), and its related clan by marriage, Fan (范), and describes the causes and development of the movement, and the policy taken by these two clans toward it. After analyzing the so-called "chia-nu" or household slave system, he finds that there were two different social strata, "hao-nu" (豪奴) and "ni-nu" (逆奴). Thus, the author points out some salient features of the "nu-pien" or slave movement, which took place in the middle of the 16th century in the coastal areas and those along the Yantzu river. |
