<研究ノート>パールシー社会における「保守派」と「改革派」の対立構造

Abstract

現在、古来より代々ゾロアスター教を信奉してきたインドのゾロアスター教徒、つまりパールシーが少子高齢化や女性の外婚増加等による、人口減少に悩まされている一方で、改宗によって、様々な背景を持ったゾロアスター教徒が世界中に200 万いるともいわれている。しかしパールシーにとって、このような教徒数の増加は、決して手放しで喜べる話ではない。それどころか改宗者やパールシー外婚女性に対する態度を巡って、「保守派」と「改革派」に分かれ、パールシー・コミュニティを二分する論争に発展している。これは18 世紀における度重なるコミュニティの分裂によって宗教的権威が衰退してしまったことで、彼らのゾロアスター教はヨーロッパの研究成果の影響を大きく受け、彼ら独自のゾロアスター教の確立が中断されたため、彼らのアイデンティティ形成に混乱が生じ、それが今になって「保守派」対「改革派」という対立構造となって表れているのである。

Presently, Parsis who have followed Zoroastrianism for generations are suffering from a dwindling population due to a falling birthrate, aging and increasing inter-marriage. On the other hand, the supposed number of converts and would-be converts is increasing around the world. Some say that they are approximately 2 million in number. However, this is not good news for Parsis, especially for orthodox Parsis. In the Parsi community, the orthodox and the reformists, who have shown some understanding of the situation, are in fierce conflict with each other over their attitude towards converts and their inter-marriage with Parsi women. During the 18th century, the Parsis experienced a series of community divisions, which led to a decline in their religious authority. Consequently, while their knowledge about Zoroastrianism has been affected by European Zoroastrian studies, the establishment of their own Zoroastrianism was halted. The sequence of events in the community has disrupted the building of a Parsi identity. The present conflict in their community represents this disruption.
