Abstract

In the Qing 清 period, the qutuɣtu stationed at Peking were called "qutuɣtu resident in the capital" (駐京呼圖克圖). The well-known Icanskya qutuɣtu 章嘉呼圖克圖 occupied the highest position among them. The next highest was occupied by the Γaldan siregetu qutuɣtu 葛爾丹錫哷圖呼圖克圖. Here an attempt is made to clarify the biographies of successive incarnations of the Γaldan siregetu qutuɣtu, especially the first, Nag dban blo gros rgya mtsho (1635-1688), and the second, Blo bzan bstan pahi ni ma (1689-1746?). The Khri chen sprul pahi sku blo bzan bstan pahi ni ma dpal bzan pohi mram par thar pa dpyod ldan yid dban hgugs pahi pho na, written by the seventh Dalai Lama, is a very important and reliable source for the first two biographies. In addition, following Master Miaozhou's 妙舟法師 Mengzang fojiaoshi 蒙藏佛教史, the author examines the lives of later incarnations up to the beginning of the Republican period. Through this article, "which is a result of the author's researches on the qutuɣtu resident in Peking, the real nature of Qing policy towards the Lamaists is clarified.
