Abstract: The Fu-she 復社 organized by Zhang Pu was a nationwide club of literary figures which gradually took on the character of a political movement and has been described as an offshoot of the Dong-lin party 東林黨. Late Ming China was already an "information society"; the Fu-she established branch chapters at the county 縣 level, and the heads of the chapters collected and disseminated political information. In this connection not only local authorities but also high officials of the central government formed links with the Fu-she and attempted to make use of it. As the faction of the Grand Secretary Wen Ti-ren 溫體仁 hated the Fu-she and attempted to carry out a purge against it, the latter responded to this threat by supporting the former Grand Secretary Zhou Yan-ru 周延儒 and succeeded in restoring him to power. But Zhang Pu died immediately afterwards and before long the Ming was extinguished. Zhang Pu advocated "the revival of ancient learning" 古學復興, and was one of the inspirers of Qing critical scholarship 考證學, but he himself was no creative scholar and has left behind only a large number of compilations and collections.
