抄録: The 1925 disputes that occurred at the Japanese-owned spinning mills in Qingdao, Shandong 山東 province have been noted as the beginning of the May Thirtieth movement. But this movement has been generally regarded only as nationalistic movement against the Japanese imperialism. The significance of the movement as a labor dispute has been completely ignored. This treatise will describe the history of the disputes at the Japanese spinning mills in Qingdao until the disasterous defeat on May 29th by the military clique of Fengtian 奉天. In addition, I shall also try to clarify both the nature of the dispute and the subjective and objective conditions that provided it. The results of my analysis of the disputes are as follows. (1) The disputes may be divided into two stages. The first stage began on April 19th when the strike occurred and ended on May 10th when the laborers had obtained a certain victory. After May 11th, the disputes between the employers and the laborers began again. Soldiers were summoned to suppress the unrest until May 29th. The nature of the struggle and the form it took in these two stages differed completely. (2) The factory workers who had responsible positions assumed leadership in the disputes. (3) The disputes were essentially an economic struggle. Their potential was too limited to develop into or change into a nationalistic and anti-imperialist movement.
