Abstract: In present study I attempt to uncover the characteristics of the central elements of the amir stratum supporting the central ruler of the Timurid dynasty in the first half of the 15th century, Shah Rukh. To do this I have abstracted the names of 57 persons noted in the genealogical compilation Mu'izz al-Ansab to have been amir-i tuman (i.e. holders of the highest military rank) in the government of Shah Rukh. I have investigated their genealogies, status, fiefs and careers and have come to the following three conclusions. 1) The central elements participating in the government of Shah Rukn were composed of at least four kin groups : the Barlas clan, the Tarkhan clan, the 'Alika family and the Arghun Shah family (the clan affiliation of these two families is not known). 2) The development of the Tarkhan clan, the 'Alika family and the Arghun Shah family shows genealogical continuity from the reign of Timur, but these three groups had risen to prominence only under the reign of Shah Rukh in contrast the Barlas clan. 3) The preferental treatment of the Barlas clan which cannot be clearly shown under the reign of Timur is visible under the reign of Shah Rukh.
