抄録: In interpreting the historical documents regarding the various states in question, two opinions stand opposed to each other : the opinion that the ducal households were included as the object of the move, and the opinion that they were not included. According to the entry under Zhao 昭公 9 in the Zuo-zhuan, when the state of Xu 許 moved from Shi 葉 to Yi 夷 (Chengfu 城父), a portion of the city dwellers of Yi were moved to neighboring Chen 陳, and the fields west of the Pu River 濮水 that were part of the lands of Yi were transferred to the control of Chen. At the same time, in the case of the state of Xu that was moved to Yi, from the lands controlled by the neighboring state of Zhoulai 州來, the portion north of the Huai River was taken and transferred to the control of Yi. From this, we can suppose that the people of Xu who moved from Chi to Yi consisted of the duke and his clansmen, plus a portion of city dwellers who had been living in Chi and had constituted the state of Xu. In this way, the people of Xu who were moved, as mentioned in the entry for Zhao 13, probably constituted the same group as those in the entry for Zhao 9. If one wants the meaning of moving to be taken as the building of a city, one must assume that Jing 荊 means, in addition to the area within and near the walls of Chu. However, the resulting co-existence of a Shen county, which is the city in question here, with another "Shen", that was the object of the move, makes this hypothesis seem farfetched. Inferring from the previous example of Xu, it is probably more appropriate to take Jing to be the area within the wall, without limiting it to the environs, and to fix one's attention on the migration of the ducal households with regard to all the city-states in question.
