Abstract: | Indonesia has now unified local administration system all over the country, down to village level, due to the high-handed national integration policy of the government of the Republic of Indonesia. As a preliminary research to the historical background of the unification, this paper traces the changes of administrative divisions in a concrete way in Java, where the model of present system was established, from 1874, when the standardized sub-district system was introduced to most of the area, to 1945, when Indonesia declared her independence. It was at the end of the 1920's that as a result of the decentralization policy, started in the beginning of this century, the unified system of administrative divisions prevailed in Java, except the Principalities. Of this Province-Residency-Regency/ Municipality-District-Subdistrict system, the Regency and District have been abolished after independence, and the Subdi strict has become today's District (Kecamatan). The number of the Regency and Subdistrict were decreased by about 10 percent in the middle of the 1930's. Most of today's Regencies and Districts are same as the curtailed ones. |
