Abstract: Zhengtao dudu has generally been considered to be a shortened form of subjugating commander-in-chief of military affairs (dudu zhengtao zhujunshi 都督征討諸軍事). In this paper, this title will be used as a general term, including all the variants of dudu zhengtao zhujunshi. In order to clarify the role of the zhengtao dudu in the Liang, I have analyzed the historical materials for zhengtao dudu and related matters. Zhengtao dudu was a temporary military title for the commander of a subjugating army. In the case of major military actions, whether against foreign powers or internal foes, beyond the abilities of a regional inspector (zhou-cishi 州刺史), a zhengtao dudu was appointed and dispatched. The zhengtao dudu could command both central and rocal troops necessary for the campaign. A zhou-cishi with the military title of commander-in-chief of regional military affairs (dudu zhouzhujunshi 都督州諸軍事) was in a favorable position to organize a subjugating army, thus strengthening his functions as zhengtao dudu. Basically, the style of the zhengtao dudu in the Liang of the Southern Dynasties succeeded to the tradition started in the Eastern Jin 東晉.
