抄録: | During the Han period, it was common to bestow titles as a reward for distinction in military service. Recently, wooden strips have been discovered in Han-period tombs at Shangsun jiazhai 上孫家寨 in Qinghai 青海 that include details of military law regulating the conferral of these titles. In this paper, I analyze the nature of these strips and attend to link the titles bestowed on soldiers with their specific military achievements. These strips show that there was close restriction of titles bestowed for military distinction, although this form of imperial recognition became more common during the latter half of the Former Han. To compensate for the relative infrequency of the conferral of titles, gifts of cash were also given to soldiers in recognition of military achievement. I also analyze in this paper the distinction between Baijue 拜爵, or titles conferred specifically in recognition of military achievements, and Cijue 賜爵, titles bestowed in recognition of non-military services. |
