<調査報告・実践報告>フィールドワークを活用した英語実践能力の養成とその意義 --UC 実習型・夏季短期派遣プログラムの実践記録から

Abstract

「UC実習型・夏季短期派遣プログラム」は京都大学において平成23年度より開始した新しいタイプの短期派遣留学プログラムである。本プログラムの特徴は工学・農学・経営管理の三分野を基盤とする分野横断型の語学研修とキャンパス外でのフィールドワークを組み合わせ、実践的な英語運用能力のみならず国際性や行動力(交渉力、協調性、リーダーシップ)をも養成しようとする点にある。本稿では、「UC実習型・夏季短期プログラム」について企画の背景、プログラムの立案過程、実施状況、今後の課題について報告すると共に、本プログラムの核心部分であるフィールドワークと英語実践能力の関係について論じる。

This paper examines the customized interdisciplinary research program developed by the University of California Davis Extension for Kyoto University students. Twenty-two students participated in a three-week intensive program, which was designed to improve English proficiency, critical thinking, and academic skills through diverse activities in and out of the classroom. Interdisciplinary research project groups proposed, discussed and decided on three major areas of inquiry to explore. Through reading, research, and planning the groups gathered information related to their areas of inquiry. The program featured eighteen on-site visits and three program lectures that took place in the Davis community and greater Bay Area, where small groups were able to conduct their own research work. Information gathered from on-site visits was combined with key points identified through reading and research, and incorporated into the final group presentations. Through these presentations, students developed confidence and improved their oral communication skills. Students learned how to make effective oral and visual presentations, and how to apply verbal and non-verbal public speaking techniques. This paper describes how this program was designed, as well as their critical thinking and interdisciplinary communication skills.
