dc.description.abstract | In this paper I examine the changes of the Cult of Heaven (in the Suburban Sacrifices) and the Emperors' Ancestral Cult (in the Ancestral Temple) during the latter half of the Tang dynasty. My results are as follows: In the mid-Tang period, Xuan-zong 玄宗 initiated the serial rites of the Taiqing-palace 太清宮 (Laozi-temple), the Ancestral Temple and the first Suburban Sacrifices. De-zong 徳宗 performed these serial rites in the first month of the year following his accession to the throne. Following this precedent, each emperor performed the succession-to-the-next-year serial rites. De-zong proclaimed his era name on New Year's Day, and granted a general amnesty on the day of the Suburban Sacrifice. Mu-zong 穆宗, however, proclaimed his era name and granted a general amnesty both on the day of the Suburban Sacrifice. Yi-zong 懿宗 performed the succession-to-the-next-year serial rites on the day of the winter solstice, and also proclaimed his era name on that day. In sum, the succession-to-the-next-year serial rites were established in the latter part of the Tang dynasty. These rites appealed in particular to the citizens of the Tang capital, Chang'an. In the Southern Dynasties, many emperors had performed the Suburban Sacrifices and the rites of the imperial Ancestral Cult regularly. However, under the Tang, these rituals were transformed to high festivals which many emperors in the latter half of the Tang performed only one time during each reign. The imperial rites were transformed to secular festivals through the period of the Tang dynasty. | en |
