Abstract

At 11 stations in Tanabe Bay, at least 48 species of hydromedusae (counting only one species each of the taxonomically uncertain taxa: the genera Clytia and Obelia, the suborders Calycophorae and Cystonectae), four species of scyphomedusae, and three species of ctenophores were collected with a plankton net (0.33 mm mesh) during 25 shipboard collections conducted between August of 2001 and September of 2002, and 30 shoreline collections made from March to November, 2004. Monthly changes in the number of species found in these samples coincided well with changes in water temperature in Tanabe Bay. The maximum number of species (35 species) was recorded in August when the water temperature was highest. The sampling stations inside the bay were characterized by the occurrence of 10 meroplanktonic species, not counting eight additional species represented by just one individual each. The most abundant species were the two asexual budding hydromedusae Podocoeryna minima and Proboscidactyla ornata, with peak densities exceeded 100 inds. M^-3 each in June and July.
