<特集論文>インドの食料生産 : 中国、米国との比較

Abstract

インドの食料生産を中国や米国の食料生産と比較した。インドの穀物生産量は中国や米国より少ないものの順調に増大している。窒素肥料消費量が増えたために、穀物単収が増加した。その結果、生産量が増大した。中国と異なり、インドでは経済が発展しても一人当たりの食肉消費量が増大していない。近年、牛乳の消費量が増大しているものの、その量は米国の約1/3に留まる。魚の摂取量も少ない。インド人のタンパク質摂取量は他の国に比べて少ない。これは宗教や食文化の影響と思われる。食肉需要が増加しないために、飼料穀物の需要が増えない。一方、生産量が順調に増加したために、インドは21世紀になって穀物を輸出するようになった。20世紀にしばしば飢饉に襲われたインドは、そのような状況を克服することに成功した。人口増加率が低下していることから、インドの食料事情は今後も確実に改善し続けよう。

Food production in India was compared with food production in China and the United States. It is increasing steadily, although the cereal production of India is less than that of China and the United States. Since the amount of nitrogen fertilizer consumption has increased, the grain yield has increased. As a result, cereal production has increased. Unlike China, although the economy developed, the quantity of per capita meat consumption did not increase in India. The amount of milk consumption is increasing in recent years; the consumption rate is still about 1/3 of that of the United States. Intake of fish is low too. Indians have a low protein intake in comparison with that of other countries. This is considered to be due to the influence of religion and the gastronomic culture. Since the demand for meat does not increase, the demand for feed grain does not increase. On the other hand, since cereal production has increased steadily, India can export grain in the 21st century. India often suffered food crises in the 20th century, but this situation has improved. Because the population growth rate is falling, the food situation in India will continue to improve in the future.
