「木材ノ工藝的利用」にみられる材質と用途の関係

Abstract

わが国の木材利用の歴史で非常に高い水準に到達していた明治末に出版された「木材ノ工藝的利用」(明45, 1912) の巻末に記載されている「木材ノ工藝的利用一覧表」を用いて材質と用途の関係を解析し, 先人がある用途に適した木材を求めるにあたって, どのような材質を基準にして樹種を選んだかを考察した。木材がある用途に使用される場合, どのような材質の理由をもって使用されるかの記載をもとに, その材質が用途にとってどの程度の重要性をもっているかを, 数量的に解析した。すなわち, ある用途に使用される樹種のうち, 特定の材質の理由でこの用途に使用される樹種の割合がこの重要性を示す指標であると考え, これを要件率と名付け, この値が高い材質がその用途選択に当っての重要な材質であると仮定し, 各用途について材質の要件率を求めた。木材の利用に当って雅致, 材色, 色沢, 木理などの外観が重要視される用途, および緻密で, 狂いが少ない樹種が要求される用途が多い。また, 軽軟, 白色材, 加工容易, 力学的性能もまた樹種選釈の要因になることが多い。

Description of "Mokuzai no Kogeiteki Riyo" (1912), edited at a golden age of wood utilization in Japan, is analyzed. From the relationship between wood properties and end-uses described in the publication the property requirement for a particular end-use is expressed as a ratio of the number of species used because of the specific property for the end-use to the total number of species used. The ratio is an index showing how important the property is for the end-use; this ratio is referred to as requisiteness. The property requisiteness is tabulated for 51 end-uses. Tastefulness, color, and figure are very important characteristics when selecting species for many end-uses. Fine texture, processability, low propensity to warp, and strength properties are also required.
