It is wellknown that any type of ground cover reduces the depth of frost penetration. However, very few studies have been made to determine the actual extent by which a ground cover reduces soil freezing and thawing. In this report, the authors deal with some investigation on the penetration of soil freezing and thawing in a bare ground, in a larch plantation and a natural mixed forest. This investigation was carried out in the Liang Shui Experimental Forest of Northeast Forestry University in southern Xiao Xing An Ling (lat. 47°11′, long. 128°53′, alt. 400m) during winters of 1990-91 and 1991-92. The results obtained from this investigation were as follows; 1) The continuous frost began to penetrate in late October and emerged completely in mid or late June. 2) In both winters, the maximum depths of frost penetration were greater in a bare ground than in a larch plantation or a natural mixed forest. 3) In bare ground, the frost depth might be presumed from the following equation, X=3.8・I1/2 where I is Freezing Index Value. |
