抄録: This article analyzes the consciousness of the contemporary young Japanese people about their orientation to the local life: how they think about the urban and local area? How they think about their future place to live? The frame I used here is the life structure approach. The elements of the total life, in this framework, are occupational life, residential life and leisure life. I used here the data of a survey in 1995. The samples of the survey were students of four universities in Kyoto and Nara, one of the urban areas in Kansai metropolitan district of Japan. Two of the findings from multivariate analysis are as follows. (1) The major elements that regulate the orientation of the future residential area of the young Japanese are pattern of their birthplace (rural area
urban area), their aspiration levels to social status and their preference for rural lifestyle. Especially the last element is important. (2) It is estimated that problem of adaptation would be happen for the young people who came from rural area with a prospect to live in urban area and who came from urban area with a prospect to rural area. It is necessary to solve the problem of adaptation: the human relations or the interactions between the native people and young newcomers from the opposite type of areas.
