抄録: What makes local residents in Wakabayashi possible to engage in a local residents' movement for more than 30 years even though they have little experience in residents' movements and have a very small local community? The objective of this paper is to clarify a mechanism of the durability of local residents' movements. Focusing on solidarity and sustainability as key factors that affect the success of the movement, it is considered based on interview surveys that how these factors are gained by a movement community. As for solidarity, it is divided into two types. One is solidarity which a movement community has owned since even before starting their movement (= "innate solidarity") and the other is solidarity which is acquired through experiences in the movement (= "acquired solidarity"). Solidarity of a community is enhanced particularly by frequent repeats of the formation and the reformation of the acquired solidarity. When these actions, the formation and the reformation, are not hampered, it is easier to keep sustainability. In addition, it is necessary for the sustainability of a residents' movement that acquired solidarity is constructed within the period while the community members can maintain their incentives for engaging the movement or that opportunities to recognize existed solidarity are given for members. In the former case, conducting multidimensional activities makes new various solidarities that have multilayered relationships. The latter is functional for putting the movement in the right track and sharing thoughts within the community particularly in such a case as the durability of a community is endangered. From these results, it is verified that the quality of solidarity (mainly the time of acquirement, the way of acquirement and the conformation of acquirement) affects the sustainability of a resident' movement. On the other hand, regardless of solidarity, when there is a justifiable reason for concluding a movement, a situation smoothly goes on to the discontinuance of sustainability. Moreover, even if a movement is no longer durable, when residents perceive the issue that the movement targets in the context of their local problems, there is a possibility to take residents to a new phase since residents' consciousness may come to community revitalization and community development based on the experiences accumulated from their movement.
