抄録: During the Edo period, cultural trade brought about not only exchange in artifacts, but also in ideas of aesthetics, fuelling inspiration for artists both in Japan and the West. Mutual influences seen in the works of the Impressionists and of the Ukiyoe masters reinforce this phenomenon, and henceforth Japan is seen as both a mysterious yet highly creative environment. The concept of art and creativity within Japanese popular culture contents, be it that of the Edo period or of today, is one which is constantly in struggle. This paper will examine the image of Japan that its cultural trades reinforce in the West throughout various periods in time, from its high cultural status in the 19th century, through the periods of "de-Japanisation" when the roots of its cultural exports were hidden away (or "deleted"), through to today's modern popular culture and marketing phenomena in order to pinpoint the factors surrounding the current resurgence of interest in Japanese popular culture, which is often referred to as "Japan Cool", but what could be considered in essence to be a re-emergence of Japonisme.
