Abstract

In my paper, I discuss Chinese women's motivation for marriage to Japanese men through intermediary agencies. Previous studies have focused on economic disparities, as well as, social and cultural factors. However, there has been no research study paying attention to the question -- from a macroscopic perspective -- of where these women actually come from. Having this problem in mind, I first searched for regions on a macro-level where Chinese women married to Japanese men come from. It became clear that such women do not come from all over China, but just from certain areas. In quest of the characteristics of these areas, it also became clear that these areas hold certain social capitals with Japan that provide the route to Japan for these women. Moreover, based on such women's life experiences, I also analyzed their motivation to come to Japan on a microscopic level. As a result, economic factors, intimate relation factors, agency factors have been found significant. Furthermore, I also focus on the interaction between the macro and micro levels. Not all of the women living in areas that have social capitals with Japan intend to marry Japanese men. Women that have intimate relations with other areas cannot imagine marrying Japanese men. Thus, in this paper I argue that the research of the interaction between regionality on the macro-level (that is, the social capitals of a given region with Japan) and individual factors on the micro-level become indispensable to understand the true characters of international marriage.
