抄録: Word is an intuitive concept which is often taken for granted in linguistic analysis, but is notoriously difficult to define. After reviewing a variety of wordhood criteria, this paper presents an emergent view of the word concept, in which a word emerges as a result of interacting functional factors, rather than a universal formal category. It is argued that wordhood criteria can be grouped into two major types, one being whether it is stored in the lexicon, and the other being whether it is pronounced as a chunk. This view is then applied to the analysis of verb sequences in Japanese and Korean. Verb sequences (which have been called in a variety of ways, including 'compound verbs' and 'serial verb constructions') in Japanese and Korean have been known to be classified into several classes based on their different grammatical behaviors. This paper investigates correlations among variables that have been seen as defining properties of word, including compositionality, phonological wordhood, interruptibility, anaphoric islands, semantic scope, and so on. It is argued that an emergent view of word concept can not only neatly classify verb sequences based on those variables, but also answer the question how and why those factors correlate with each other.
