Edgar Allan Poe's The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym was first published as a single volume in July 1838. In 1837, the preceding year, Poe retired from the editorial job at the Southern Literary Messenger, which issued only two installments of the novel, and moved to New York City. There remain only a few letters and notes by him at this period, and it is not evident how he spent time in this city. Although The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym is mainly set in the sea away from a community, the condition of the city surely had a great influence on his composition of the novel. This paper, by reading his short story "The Man of the Crowd" in parallel, brings it to light how Poe thought of writing his novel in a city.en
