<依頼論文>道徳的想像力論が投げかけるもの --応用倫理からメタ倫理学まで

Abstract

「道徳的想像力」は、日本ではまだ認知度がきわめて低いが、英語圏の倫理学では特に注目を集めており、一般の論議でも使用されている概念である。本論考は、この道徳的想像力の実践・理論双方に対する示唆を探ってゆくことを目的とする。背景には、主流の合理主義的な倫理学に対する反省がある。実践的な意思決定の場面で倫理を実効あるものにするために欠かせない能力として、想像力の意義が注目されているのである。代表的な理論家であるジョンソンによると、一見純粋に合理的なものに見える倫理学説や意思決定の場面でも、想像力の資源が必ず働いているという。また道徳的想像力論は、「規範原理」の位置や、「道徳の全域化」の展望、絶対的な価値を欠く社会のなかでの客観性など、メタ倫理的な射程も含む。本論考ではこうした問いかけの意義を批判的見地も交えつつ吟味し、環境倫理や道徳教育などの実践的なテーマへの示唆も探ってゆきたい。

"Moral Imagination" has become a key ethical concept in the English-speaking world, though inadequately recognized in Japanese academic ethics. This paper aims to explore the theoretical and practical implications of moral imagination. Some ethicists, including Hume and Smith, discussed the role of imagination in ethics. Today the importance of moral imagination has been more and more emphasized, because the limit of mainstream rationalist ethics is growing obvious. Its model of moral reasoning is invalid to real ethical problems. Moral imagination is an essential faculty that enables us to implement ethics in practical cases, functioning in the cognition of situation, reflection on mental models, and the exploration of possibilities. Especially business ethicists take moral imagination seriously. According to Mark Johnson, there are various imaginative resources in moral reasoning: metaphors, prototypes, framing of situation, and narrative. These underlie alleged purely rationalist ethical theories and decision-making. On the other hand, moral imagination theory has a metaethical dimension: a questions on the position of normative dimension, a broader scope of morality, and "transperspectivity" as a form of objectivity without absolutes. This paper examines these points critically and explores its implications for environmental ethics and moral education.
