Abstract

This essay examines the uniqueness and significance of the film writer and director Preston Sturges's screwball comedy, The Lady Eve (1941), in the light of its place in the history of American cinema. This film depicts a battle of sexes between a hero as "innocent Adam" and a heroine as "fallen Eve, " which arc the self-referential characters of the leading actor and actress (Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck). The hero who adheres to innocence dominates over the heroine and forces her to personify his ideal : "innocent Eve". It causes a split and multiplication of her identity and an endless battle of sexes with repeated structure. As the genre declined, its uniqueness extends to other Sturges's films in a more extreme way. In Unfaithfully, Yours (1948), the heroine is threatened by the husband with murderous intent, and their marriage life which is expected to be a happy ending of a battle becomes a terrifying one. Sturges summed up screwball comedy by depicting the unique battle which anticipates the battle of sexes in film noir : a quasi-genre that flourished in 1940s and 50s.
