<研究ノート>近代インドにおける仏教の再発見 : その背景と今日的意義

Abstract

Focusing on the period which broadly runs between the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, this research examines the historical context and the contemporary relevance of the rediscovery of Buddhism in modern India. Indian intellectuals of this period were deeply influenced by the Western interpretation of Buddhism and accepted it in the context of the Hindu reform movement. Therefore, in many cases, Buddhism was associated with social reform and some Buddhists even connected it with socialism. Although many Buddhists shared the tendency to interpret Buddhism in a rationalistic way, they were diverse in their attitudes toward Hinduism and the question of conversion. The argument which contrasts the 'rationality' of Buddhism and the 'irrationality' of Hinduism immensely influenced Ambedkar's understanding of Buddhism and still continues to define the nature of Buddhism in today's India.

本稿は19世紀後半から20世紀前半に焦点を当て, 近代のインドで仏教が再発見されるに至った歴史的背景とその今日的意義を考察するものである。仏教に関する当時のインドにおける議論は, 西洋的仏教解釈をヒンドゥー教の改革運動の文脈で読み解いたものという側面を強く持っており, 仏教と社会改革運動はしばしば連関していた。一部の仏教者は, 仏教を社会主義と関連付けて議論した。ただ, 仏教を合理主義的に解釈する傾向は広く共有されていたとはいえ, ヒンドゥー教に対するスタンスや改宗といった問題に関しては様々な立場が存在した。仏教の「合理性」とヒンドゥー教の「不合理性」を対比するこの時代の議論はアンベードカルの仏教観に強い影響を及ぼし, 今日に至るまでインド社会における仏教のあり方を一面で規定し続けている。
