Abstract

This paper attempts to (1) reconsider the definition of the feature [±spatial] proposed by Nguyen Thi Ha Thuy (2014), (2) suggest a definition of referent indicated by demonstratives of manner and quality, and (3) consider the possibilities of analyzing the function of the này-the-the kia using [±spatial]. The results are as follows: [+spatial] the này : proximal, the kia : distal, [－spatial] the. Demonstratives of manner and quality have a three-term system of the này-the-the kia. Along with the deictic function, demonstratives of manner and quality also have the function of describing the manner of the action or the quality of the subject mentioned in the utterance, of which the reference is either the agent of the action or the subject itself. In deictic uses, the này (proximal) indicates a referent spatially close to the speaker, while the kia (distal) indicates a referent far from the speaker. the does not possess a spatial distinction, and identifies a referent close or belonging to the hearer, or the hearer him/herself as the agent of the action.Meanwhile, the has a typical memorative use identifying a non-present referent recalled from the speaker's memories. In other words, any non-present referent is indicated by the. Syntactically, the has an anaphoric use referring back to a phrase/clause mentioned in earlier text/utterance, a sentence, or an utterance itself. the này and the kia do not have this use.
