St John is a young, stoic pastor in Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre (1847). Thus far, little attention has been paid to him and his proposal to Jane. In this paper, we argue that St John's view of marriage and wealth comes from his Calvinist philosophies; to do so, we refer to Max Weber's book of economic sociology, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism (1904-05). According to Weber, Calvinists consider their labor as a vocation, and approve of wealth as the result of working hard for God. Applying this logic to St. John, a typical Calvinist, it can be said that his proposal is based on Jane's wealth, rather than his love for her. In conclusion, St. John is a character who represents Charlotte's dislike for Calvinism.en
