Abstract

Drastic changes in Japan's rural localities, or Chiiki, where innovative farming entities have emerged, prompt close examination of their varying patterns of business deployment and development of relationships with relevant actors in Chiiki. This paper pays special attention to mutual and complementary relationships between innovative farming entities and Chiiki as analytical units. More specifically, business resources such as land, other material, human, financial, and information resources are incorporated into our descriptive theoretical models that describe possible connections and/or networks between innovative farming entities and Chiiki. Moreover, drawing on insights from literature on support for farming business and social systems theory, we conceptualize mutually and complementarily supporting systems between innovative farming entities and Chiiki. We argue that in this theoretical framework on supporting systems on which we hypothesize the future of both innovative farming entities and Chiiki, disposition and availability of relevant resources and trustful and reliable relationships between two parties are critically important.
