世界のキング --翻訳されゆくエルヴィス・イメージ-- (小特集 Echoes of Elvis --グローバル・アイコンの軌跡)

Abstract

本稿は, エルヴィス・プレスリーの移り変わりゆく(翻訳されゆく)ヴィジュアル・イメージを探求する標本調査である。ここに例示されるエルヴィスの表象は, 伝統的なアートやインサイダー・アート--アカデミックな育成を受けた芸術家による絵画や彫刻--の範疇には容易に当てはまらない。それらはむしろ, アカデミーや国家やマーケットの諸インスティテューションの内部と彼方とで流通するエルヴィスのポピュラー・イメージである。こうした種類のイメージは, ヴェルヴェット・ペインティングやライヴ・パフォーマンス, さらには映画やデジタル・スペースを含む多種多様なメディアに入ってくる。これらの例はいずれも複雑で, 多層的で, ここで満足な検討を行うに余る豊かな内容をもっているが, それだけにエルヴィスが世界中でいかに見られ, 作られ, そしてリメイクされているかという点に踏み込むひとつの対話を開いてくれる。本稿に提示されるのは, 三つの翻訳モードを通じて移動するエルヴィスのイメージについてのケース・スタディーである。第一に, グローバルになったアメリカのエルヴィス。第二に, アメリカのなかのグローバルなエルヴィス。そして第三に, ローカルな地域でイメージされるグローバルなエルヴィス。

This article is an exploratory survey of visual images of Elvis Presley in translation. The depictions of Elvis sampled do not easily fall into the categories of traditional or insider art̶painting and sculpture by academically trained artists. They are popular images of Elvis that circulate within and beyond institutions of the academy, the state, and the market. These kinds of images come in a variety of media including velvet paintings, live performance, and film and digital space. Each of these visual instances is complicated, layered, and too rich to examine completely in this paper, but they do open a dialogue into how Elvis is seen, made, and remade in world. What follows are case studies of Elvis images that travel through three modes of translation: the first is American Elvis gone global, the second is global Elvis in America, and the third is global Elvis imagined locally.
