Abstract

This paper presents results of a questionnaire survey that we have conducted in 2017 targeting 78 experts of volcanology to investigate their activities in volcanic disaster councils organized by local governments surrounding 49 active volcanoes. The survey was conducted as a task of Commission on Mitigation of Volcanic Disasters of The Volcanological Society of Japan. We sent the questionnaire to the experts via e-mail and 76 experts replied (response rate: 97%). The specialties of many of the questionees are geophysics, geology, and sabo (erosion control) engineering, and 50% of the experts are sixty years old or older. More than a third of the experts are involved in more than three councils. The survey indicates that many of the experts are willing to devote themselves to the activities of volcanic disaster councils, while they actually require an established organization for volcanic disaster prevention and education system for experts.
