ジョン・ロールズの「自尊の社会的基盤」の検討

Abstract

本稿は, ジョン・ロールズ(1921-2002)の自尊に関する議論を検討するものである. ロールズは, とりわけ貧困層の自尊心に対する関心から, 制度と自尊の関係を体系的に議論した論者として知られている. 国内におけるロールズの自尊に関する研究はもともと数が少なく, また英米圏の先行研究を広範に検討したものはまだない. 本稿では, それらの先行研究を詳しく検討し, これまで提起されてきた論点およびその変遷を整理したうえで, ロールズの自尊に関する議論を再検討するものである. ロールズの自尊の議論の一つの難点は, 彼が複数の自尊の社会的基盤を提示し, それが一括りにするには無理のある異なるレベルの自尊を含んでいる点にある. この点について本稿では, 先行研究による自己評価と自己尊重の区分をふまえつつも, ロールズの議論の解釈を通じて, そこには四つの異なるレベルの自尊が含まれていることを明らかにする. それと同時に本稿は, ロールズが自尊を区別しなかったことにも一定の理解を示し, 複数の社会的基盤が「市民が対等な立場に立ち, 互いの生き方を尊重し合うこと」を軸に相互に関連しながら機能しているという見方を示す. このように二つの視点で議論を捉えることによって, ロールズの自尊の議論の全体像はより明瞭に理解されるだろう.

This paper is to examine an argument of self-respect by John Rawls (1921-2002). He is well-known for framing his discussions within the systematic problems of social institutions while paying note to poor classes' loss of self-respect. However there are few domestic research analyses of Rawls's concept of self-respect. This paper reexamines Rawls's discussion of self-respect, investigating previous studies in English-speaking countries in detail and elucidating disputed points. One difficulty of Rawls's discussions of self-respect is that he shows more than one social base of self-respect which entail self-respect of different, distinct levels. Referring to the distinction of self-respect and self-esteem which many critics point out, I argue that in Rawls's discussions there are four different levels of self-respect. Meanwhile, to some extent I have grasped why he didn't distinguish these. For multiple correlated social bases function upon the axis of the idea that "citizens should be equal and respect one-another's way of life". In this way, through two points of view, the entire structure of his discussion concerning self-respect should be understood more clearly.
